The following dictionary presents key terms frequently used in discussions about diversity , equity and inclusion ( DEI ). The terms are defined according to how they are used in these contexts ; thus , the definitions here may differ from other known definitions . Similarly , the language society uses to talk about DEI is likely to grow and change as we better understand one another . As such , this dictionary is a living document and will be updated to reflect the evolution of our understanding of diversity , equity and inclusion .
Black History Month Women ’ s History Month
Asian American Pacific Islander Month
February marks Black History Month , a tradition that was officially recognized in 1976 as part of the nation ' s bicentennial celebrations . It aims to honor the contributions that African Americans have made and to recognize their sacrifices .
Pride Month
March of each year , we celebrate the countless women who have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality , justice , and opportunity in our Nation . We also reaffirm our commitment to advancing rights and opportunities for women and girls in the United States and around the world .
Juneteenth
May was designated AAPI Month to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants to arrive in the U . S . in 1843 . May was also chosen as way to remember the Chinese immigrants who worked tirelessly to create the first transcontinental railroad in America in May of 1843 and ending in May of 1869 .
Hispanic Heritage Month
LGBT Pride Month is a month , typically June , dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian , gay , bisexual , and transgender ( LGBT ) pride . Pride Month began after the Stonewall riots , a series of gay liberation protests in 1969 , and has since spread outside of the United States .
A holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US . The holiday was first celebrated in Texas , where on that date in 1865 , in the aftermath of the Civil War , enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation .
Each year , Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 , by celebrating the histories , cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain , Mexico , the Caribbean and Central and South America
