Complex dialysis access
Known throughout the Southwest region for complex dialysis access procedures , the team was the first site in the US to use the latest generation system for creating an arteriovenous fistula through the use of flexible 4F magnetic catheters with radiofrequency electrodes for the delivery of radiofrequency energy , a new and innovative treatment option for patients with end-stage
Support is provided to the National Kidney Foundation ’ s “ Fistula First ” initiative for endstage renal disease patients . renal disease ( ESRD ). The technology enables vascular surgeons on the Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas medical staff to provide ESRD patients with two additional fistula location options that are less invasive compared to a surgical fistula . Using this approach can help create and maintain AV access for patients on hemodialysis , which is an important expansion of the hospital ’ s complex dialysis access program .
Inside-Out ® procedure
The rise in complex dialysis patients was a catalyst to bring forward the Inside-Out ® procedure developed for patients who are unable to continue with dialysis due to blockage . Within days after FDA approval , the first case in North Texas was completed on the Dallas campus using the new system which is the first and only FDA cleared device at this time allowing surgeons to obtain central venous access in patients with blocked veins . The surgeon uses this system to maneuver the device from the femoral area to the preferred right-sided access near the right internal jugular vein — the chest location where normally a perm cath would be placed . This procedure could ultimately help save patients by restoring their ability to continue with dialysis .
