This therapy was designed to treat heart failure patients who may not be receiving adequate symptom relief from medications alone . This procedure is achieved through close collaboration of the patient ’ s advanced heart failure specialist and the vascular surgeon on the hospital ’ s medical staff who completes the surgical implant .
Unlike other heart failure device therapies , Barostim contains no hardware in the heart or vasculature . It works by electrically stimulating baroreceptors — natural sensors located in the wall of the carotid artery — that tell the nervous system how to regulate heart , kidney and vascular function . These effects reduce the heart ’ s workload and help it pump more efficiently , restoring balance to the autonomic nervous system and improving the symptoms of heart failure . Barostim plus heart failure medications has been shown to improve exercise capacity , quality of life and NYHA class , helping patients return to their daily activities .
Capabilities include a wide array of endovascular procedures for patients with deep vein thrombosis ( DVT ) and patients with aneurysms and vascular malformations . Additional procedures :
• Arterial thrombolysis
• Iliac , femoral , popliteal , and below the knee angioplasty and stenting
• Renal and mesenteric angioplasty and stenting
Several “ firsts ” in Texas or North Texas have been celebrated in recent months . The vascular surgery team was the first in Texas to perform IVC filter retrieval via CavaClear IVS Filter Removal Laser Sheath . The team was also notably the first in North Texas to use subclavian artery laser fenestration for treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysm .
First for Barostim™
In fiscal year 2023 , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital was the first hospital system in North Texas to successfully implant Barostim Baroreflex Activation Therapy , the world ’ s first FDA-approved heart failure device to use neuromodulation — the power of the brain and nervous system — to improve the symptoms of patients with systolic heart failure .
