the results related to transplanting hearts from donors with hepatitis C viremia .
Several transplantations occurred on the Dallas campus , which is one of the first
sites in the United States accepting Hepatitis C donor heart tissue .
The transplantation team is also trained to navigate the complex process of organ harvesting and administering normothermic regional perfusion to reduce the effects of cardiac arrest on the donor organs . The team was an early adopter of the TransMedics Organ Care System ( OCS™ ), the only FDA approved technology of its kind that allows preservation of the donor heart with extracorporeal perfusion . By mimicking the human environment , physicians can assess the hearts ’ function for any signs of damage . This advanced technology allows the hospital to expand the organ harvesting territory .
The dedication of the Baylor Dallas transplant team resulted in offering the shortest wait time from time of listing to transplant in Texas , with more than 40 % of patients receiving a transplant within 30 days and more than 77 % of patients receiving a transplant within one year .
