Extracorporeal life support
Baylor University Medical Center is one of the busiest programs in the nation for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation , or ECMO . This labor-intensive treatment is amplified by the multidisciplinary team of specialists with extensive training in this procedure . The partnered approach between cardiovascular surgery , cardiology , vascular surgery , pulmonology , and critical care increases the quality of care of these acute patients backed by ECMO nurses and perfusionists .
The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization ( ELSO ) awarded Baylor Dallas the 2024 Platinum designation — one of only 16 adult facilities in the United States to earn the prestigious honor . The program at Baylor Dallas is in its 12th year and has 17 ECMO machines . The Platinum recognition is based on patient volume — Baylor Dallas has supported nearly 1,000 patients with ECMO — and , more importantly , outcomes and quality improvement .

ECMO Symposium held on Dallas campus
Baylor University Medical Center with support from Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital - Dallas hosted the second annual ECMO Symposium the first week of June 2023 . More than 200 attendees learned from one of the busiest ECMO programs in the nation . Topics included global trends in ECMO utilization , developing a normothermic regional perfusions ( NRP ) ECMO program , ethics and ECMO , implementing ECLS as an adjunct to ECMO therapy , as well as other topics of interest .
