Coach Mark Hindsley returns for his second year at the helm of Brookland football , and he hopes that is a major factor in the development of the young football program . The Bearcats finished 3-7 last season , but won the last two games of the year , and Coach Hindsley hopes to ride that momentum into this season . Senior Payton Grimes returns to lead the team on both lines . With so many offensive lineman graduating from a year ago , Grimes is a key factor in the development of a young line . Senior Austin Patterson hopes to be ready to start the season , while center Tony Pomrenke returns after taking over last season . Juniors Rylan Parish and Andrew Ellington join sophomores Easton Cunningham and Carlton Key to round out an inexperienced but developing line . The front line will be the key in the Bearcat power spread offense . Junior Hayden Elder returns after playing some wide receiver and quarterback last year . Elder looks to be one of the frontrunners for the quarterback position . He will have a committee of running backs looking to replace the productivity of All-State back Joseph Wright . Senior Malachi Stinnet leads a stable of new faces in the backfield . The senior running back is a tough runner that hits the hole hard . Fellow senior Oliver Harmon is back after playing for Forrest City last season , and sophomores Rickey Robinson and Gabe Carter led the junior high team in rushing last year . Senior Sinquan Spratt leads the Bearcat receiving corps along with fellow senior Barrett Cunningham who saw some snaps at quarterback last year . Senior Connor Marshall is another receiver who is physical with the ball and blocks well on the outside , while Senior Brennan Smith and junior Walker Spears will be targets on the outside as well . Junior Caden Chambers has become one of the Bearcat ’ s most trusted targets with his hands . Senior fullback Keagan Overshine hits hard from the backfield , and fellow senior Caden Webbe provides a threat from the h-back position . Junior Jake Reece could also line up at h-back or at tight end . Brookland feels its defense will be much improved from a year ago . Reece anchors the middle up front at nose guard lining up alongside Grimes , Pomrenke , Key , senior Logan Walker , juniors Javan Payne and Hunter Green , and sophomore Maverick Marshall . Overshine . Overshine will move to linebacker with returning seniors Caden Webbe , Harmon , Stinnett , and Kaleb Webbe , as well as junior Preston Koekemoer and sophomore Easton Cunningham . In the secondary , Cunningham will lead the way with senior Ty Hillis , sophomores Carter and Robinson , and senior move-in Felipe Lozano . At the corners , Marshall , Spratt , Chambers and Smith will rotate . Coach Hindsley feels confident that with an entire offseason under his belt , he will know his players better , and they will feel more comfortable in his schemes . That could lead to more freedom in making plays for the Bearcats and allow them to get over the hump in some close games . Coach Hindsley is hoping to have more consistency and rhythm within the offense this season . Look for improvement in only the 11th season of varsity football at Brookland and a chance to slide into the postseason for only the second time in school history .
