Daniel Bates and the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds ended the 2023 season as the 2A-2 conference champs and are looking to be one of the top teams this year come March . After losing multiple players including the starting five to graduation , the Greyhounds are looking for the young players to step up . Hudson Rorex ( sophomore guard ) is a versatile basketball player with great scoring ability at all court phases , high basketball IQ , strong leadership , and top-notch defense . Braxton Wall ( junior forward ) has the potential to keep the inside clean by being a top defender and crashing the boards . Wall is a player that will get quality minutes due to his work ethic and leadership . Cade Marshall ( senior forward ) is the player that does not come up on the stat sheet but you need on the court . Marshall has a high motor and brings energy and passion to his team . Logan Hill ( junior guard ) possesses excellent court vision and is a very good shooter , making him a dynamic playmaker who can both score and create opportunities for his team . Cole Walker ( senior guard ) has strong shooting skills , both when taking shots and defending one-on-one . Walker also excels when he is not directly involved in the play , making smart off-the-ball moves to create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates . Dallas Durham ( freshman guard ) has impressive strength and athleticism , which he uses to his advantage in the game . Durham has an aggressive mentality when it comes to attacking the basket and is constantly in motion , displaying an incredible work rate . Coach Daniel Bates knows his team is young and needs work , but has no doubt his boys will do what needs to be done . “ Our team has a group of highly talented players who are dedicated to improving their skills day by day . We are steadily building our cohesion as a team , working together to strengthen our bonds on and off the court . By the end of the season , we have a clear plan and hope to be a much better team than we are today , and our ultimate goal is to make a strong , competitive run . We are all committed to putting in the effort and supporting each other to achieve our objectives . With our collective determination and hard work , we are optimistic about what the future holds for our team .”
The Newport Lady Greyhounds will have a new face in the head coach ’ s seat as Tanya Haigwood takes over looking to turn the program around after an 8-16 season a year ago . “ We are working to develop all fundamentals and build a system that works with our personnel ,” Haigwood said . The Lady Greyhounds are hoping to build throughout the season and be a threat come tournament time . They will have to do so with a very young team but a young team with three returning starters . Senior Lela Henderson is a strong defender and an improving scorer , and Coach Haigwood is looking to her to lead a young group . Juniors Niya Davis and Aubrey Burns also return after starting as sophomores last season . Davis is a diverse player that creates offensive opportunities , while Burns is a strong defender and sees the floor well . Fellow juniors Lexi Hembrey and Jamikia Roddy will look to contribute more this year . Hembrey is an outside scorer , and Roddy is a strong post player that attacks the boards . Sophomores Tylasia Brown and Lasedria Alcorn are looking to make an impact on the Newport roster . Brown runs the floor well and is an aggressive defender , while Alcorn can create scoring opportunities with the ball . The Lady Greyhounds may be young , but they do have some experience and athleticism . Coach Haigwood is hoping to improve as the season progresses and be ready for a run when the postseason starts .
