The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats are looking to a new head coach and several returning starters to improve on last season ’ s record and return to the postseason . Skip Dulaney takes over as head coach for the Lady Bobcats this year , and believes his team ’ s strength lies in its experience . Three seniors return to the starting lineup for Walnut Ridge . Maddie Burris , Taylor Forrester , and Rhealyn Schmidt all started last year and return a lot of game experience . Fellow Senior Emma Yarbro also returns in hopes of expanding her role from last year . Junior Layla Nunally is back and looking to contribute on both ends of the floor . Five sophomores should also make an impact to the Lady Bobcat roster , following the leadership of a strong senior group . That experience will be key in the 3A-2 conference . Coach Dulaney feels for his team to improve , Walnut Ridge will have to limit turnovers , share the basketball , show defensive intensity while rebounding the ball . NEA Sports predicts the Lady Bobcats to show improvement and challenge for a regional berth .
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats finished last season 11-16 a year ago , but with four returning starters , Coach Blake Coffman hopes to turn the corner this season and see more success . Experience will be a key strength for the Bobcats with three seniors and a junior returning to the starting lineup . Senior guards Kaden Martin , Rex Tedder , and Davis Callahan lead the way for Walnut Ridge . Martin sees the floor well and has a high basketball IQ running the offense from the point guard spot . Tedder and Callahan are guards that can score at all three levels with good range and ability to put the ball on the floor . Junior Collin Andrews is tough to stop inside with his ability to score around the basket . Senior Sebastian Hoffman is another big kid that can score inside and creates some rim protection with Andrews inside . Coach Coffman feels with three guards that can score , and two post players that are tough inside , his team will have a lot of firepower . “ Our strength this year will be our offense ,” Coffman said . “ We have plenty of options on the offensive end , but we will have to figure out how to stop teams on the defensive end to have success this year .” Defense will be a key factor in the Bobcats ’ success in the talented 3A-2 conference . If Walnut Ridge can get key stops to go along with their offensive firepower , then look for the Bobcats to be in the mix for a regional berth come February .
The experienced Wildcats are ready to fight in the 4A-3 conference . Bringing back four starters , Tristan Battles ( senior center ) is very athletic and averaged ( 10 ppg and 6rpg ) last season . Cobey Riddle ( senior guard ) is very fundamental and can score the ball . Last season he averaged ( 14 . ppg and 4ppg ). Gavin Greenwell ( senior guard ) is very skilled and knows how to play the game ( 11.6 ppg 4.7ppg ). Coda Camerom ( senior guard ) has the basic principles to perform well . ( 6ppg 3apg ). Looking to step up will be ( junior guard ) Luke Bishop . Coach Phelan states . “ The path to our success is found with the fusion of our experienced senior class and the emerging talents of our sophomores . The seniors , possessing a wealth of basketball knowledge and leadership skills , serve as mentors and guides for the younger players , imparting their wisdom , teamwork , and composure in high-pressure moments . Meanwhile , the sophomores inject fresh energy and enthusiasm , igniting a hunger to excel and introducing innovative perspectives to the game . This blend creates a dynamic team environment where each group complements the other , with the seniors providing the foundation and tradition while the sophomores infuse vitality and ambition . Our overarching goal is to unlock our team ' s full potential before the season ' s end , requiring meticulous physical and mental development , structured practices , and unwavering dedication to growth . To this end , we must nurture our strengths in ball handling , intelligence , and perimeter shooting . Ball handlers control the game ' s pace and initiate scoring opportunities , while intelligence fosters strategic decision-making , and perimeter shooting becomes a cornerstone of our offensive strategy . Additionally , fostering effective communication , teamwork , and a positive team culture are vital components for our journey to success , ensuring that we thrive not only on the court but also as a unified , supportive team .”
The Lady Wildcats will start their rebuilding journey after losing many players last season . Best player Kayde Jones ended her senior season early due to an injury and that left the Wildcats with a 1-19 record . With only one returner with experience , Chelsy Jones ( guard ) will have to carry her team throughout the season . Jones will rely on teammates Oshua Smith ( sophomore ) Dalaney Osment ( sophomore ) Topanga Elliot ( junior ) Rayahna Pirtle ( junior ) Cece Calhoun ( senior ) Jenna Hall ( senior ) and Ellisabeth Holladay ( senior ). Coach Ballew knows that this will be a rebuilding season but has high expectations for his team . A rebuilding year for a sports program , especially after losing key seniors and facing season-ending injuries like in the case of Kayde Jones can be a daunting challenge . It ' s essential to manage expectations and focus on the development of the team ' s potential . This period is an opportunity to nurture and refine the skills of younger and less experienced players building a strong foundation for the future . Team cohesion and chemistry should be a priority , as strong relationships among players can create a positive team culture that fosters support and camaraderie . While setting high aspirations , it ' s crucial to set realistic short-term goals to maintain motivation and a sense of progress . Emphasizing hard work , discipline , and a strong work ethic is paramount , as they will serve as the driving forces behind the team ' s growth . Supporting injured players through rehabilitation and eventual return is essential to make the most of their contributions . Positive leadership , flexibility , and a long-term perspective are vital for coaches and players to navigate the challenges of a rebuilding year . Small victories , even in the face of losses , should be celebrated , reinforcing the value of hard work and perseverance in the pursuit of excellence . Ultimately , rebuilding years are part of the journey towards future success , and they can lay the groundwork for a stronger and more competitive program in the long run .
