LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Eaglebrooke ,
As summer ramps up , the maintenance staff is busy with important spray applications and detailed work that will carry us through the next four months of heat . June is the beginning of high temperatures and heavy rainfall for our area . It is also the start of weed and insect season , and we have had a great start in our prevention program for these issues .
Our first application of preemergent herbicide was applied in mid-May . This is the start of a 3-application process that prevents most of the weeds we struggle with at Eaglebrooke . Goosegrass , Tropical Signal grass , and crabgrass are our main targets . We have made great strides in knocking back these weeds on the golf course , and with a consistent application schedule we will continue to get good results throughout the property .
Another important spray application is our mole cricket prevention for the year . This is done in one application using two different insecticides that cover mole crickets and grub worms . The timing of this application is critical . If it ’ s too early , we waste some residual on mole crickets before they hatch . If it ’ s too late , we miss out on killing the mole crickets at a juvenile stage and allow them to become adults and much harder to eradicate .
The summer months are tough on the maintenance staff with high heat indexes , wet conditions , and dangerous thunderstorms that pop up out of nowhere . I try to manage my crew in a way to avoid these struggles as much as possible . We try to start early and get the job done to avoid the brutal afternoons . The maintenance staff is always up to the challenge , and we will continue to work hard to make Eaglebrooke the best it can be .
