Faculty within the UAB Cardiovascular Institute use a collaborative approach to treat ischemic heart disease , offering a full spectrum of treatment options that are tailored to each individual patient ’ s needs . As a high-volume , regional referral center , our program continues to provide the most innovative therapies while meeting or exceeding national benchmarks for quality of care in the treatment of ischemic heart disease .
SURGICAL INTERVENTION Our cardiovascular surgeons perform procedures such as on-pump and off-pump ( beating-heart ) coronary artery bypass revascularization , ventricular aneurysm resection , and myocardial revascularization in patients with advanced heart failure . UAB also offers total arterial revascularization , with utilization of bilateral internal thoracic and radial arteries . Since 2016 , our team has maintained an average 3-star STS CABG Composite Quality Rating , which is the highest possible rating .
PERCUTANEOUS INTERVENTION ( PCI ) Our interventional cardiologists use the latest available technology for percutaneous coronary revascularization in the treatment of ischemic heart disease , and they have extensive expertise in evaluating and treating complex lesions , including chronic total occlusion . Mechanical circulatory support devices , such as the Impella pump and intra-aortic balloon pump ( IABP ), are available for high-risk PCI procedures . Since 2019 , our team has performed more than 2,700 PCIs .
