Medical oncology at the William N . Pennington Cancer Institute offers comprehensive , patient-centered care that focuses on delivering the best possible outcomes for patients with cancer . Our dedicated team of medical oncologists , nurses and support staff is committed to delivering personalized treatment plans and supportive care to every patient we serve . In 2023 , we served 1,455 new patients from across the region and completed 9,696 clinical visits .
During appointments , patients and physicians work together to create a personalized treatment plan that often involves a combination of therapies aimed at targeting cancer cells while minimizing harm to healthy tissues . In addition to prescribing treatment plans , medical oncologists play a vital role in coordinating care and managing side effects associated with cancer therapies . Our medical oncology providers monitor patients closely throughout the course of treatment , adjusting treatment regimens as needed to optimize outcomes and improve quality of life . Medical oncologists also collaborate with other specialists , including surgeons , radiation oncologists and supportive care providers , to provide comprehensive , multidisciplinary care to patients with cancer .
