Bird viewing

For those of you who enjoy birds , the waters of the hatchery provide a great spot to watch for a variety of bird species . After all , what waterfowl would not want to be at a hatchery with fish at easy access swimming the ponds ?
In the late winter the Canada geese arrive and love to nest on the island . Right after their arrival , the Mallards and Wood Ducks start prepping their new homes . On any day of the year if you hang around the hatchery long enough you may see a raptor cruising by . Eagles are typically around the hatchery in the winter , osprey in the spring and summer , and hawks in the spring , summer , and fall . During the spring migration you may see a variety of species ranging from Warblers to Tanagers , to Swallows , to Robins . Bring your camera and binoculars , you ’ ll be glad you did .
As you are walking through the grounds , watch for eagles or other raptors flying overhead , checking out the fish in the water for their lunch .

Hiking Trails

After you checked out all of the historic items and are out of fish food but have some more time and energy , what next ? On the east and west sides of the Hatchery grounds are two hiking trails . The trails are short with overlooks the top that provide a birds eye view of the grounds . Watch your step and be aware of poison ivy , uneven ground and tall steps . If you are lucky in the heat of the summer a big bull snake may be soaking up the sun along the path . Bull snakes are not poisonous . Visitors are asked to give the snakes their space , as this is their home too and they help control the number of rodents .
