Stretching 110 miles long and 70 miles wide across northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota , the Black Hills is home to Mount Rushmore National Memorial , Crazy Horse Memorial , Wind Cave National Park , Jewel Cave National Monument , Black Elk Peak ( the highest mountain peak between the Rocky Mountains and the Alps ), Custer State Park ( the United States ’ second largest state park ), Bear Butte State Park and Devils Tower National Monument .
The Black Hills also hosts the Sturgis Motorcyle Rally each August .
Nestled in between this impressive array of national tourist attractions you will find unsurpassed scenery , myriad family attractions and an abundance of wildlife and recreational opportunities .
Within those acres of pine-topped mountain peaks can also be found 4,000-year-old etchings hidden deep within sandstone canyons , rippling streams that still carry gold dust , crystalline mountain lakes , hiking and biking trails , air fresh with the scent of sunshine on pine trees and nights so full of twinkling stars that you will wonder where they ’ ve been all your life !
In the midst of these breathtaking surroundings , it is little wonder that the area is rich with the arts . Perhaps it ’ s not hard to be creative when you ’ re in awe of the natural masterpieces on all sides .
South Dakota ’ s motto is “ Under God , the people rule .” During the 2020 pandemic , South Dakota Gov . Kristi Noem never locked the state down , allowing the state ’ s citizens to decide what was best for them , their families , businesses and churches .
In South Dakota , you can roam free in its wide open spaces and there is nowhere in the state better to do that than in the Black Hills region . It is rich in history , scenic beauty , wildlife and friendly folk . Welcome to the Black Hills ! ■
