Bear Butte State Park near Sturgis showcases an impressive geological laccolith feature ( created by an uplift of magma ) that rises 1,253.5 feet above the surrounding plains . The mountain , elevation 4,426 feet , is sacred to many Indian tribes , and some still come to hold religious ceremonies . Prayer cloths and tobacco bundles can be seen hung with car e in branches of the mountain ’ s trees .

The Lakota name for the site is Mato Paha , which means “ Bear Mountain .” The Cheyenne also have a name for the mountain : “ Noahvose .”
Scenic hiking trails include the summit trail ( 1.85 miles ), as well as a trail around Bear Butte Lake ( 2.5 miles ). From the summit , one can take in a 360-degree view that includes four states : South Dakota , Montana , North Dakota and Wyoming .
The park includes a campsite nearby where horseback riding , fishing and boating are allowed . Recalling a bygone era , a herd of buffalo grazes near the base of the mountain . The park has an entrance fee , and one can visit the education center where displays , books and brochures are available . ■
