Yellowjacket Ace Eyes More Success in Final Season . By : Ryan Fletcher In just a few weeks multi-sport athlete Easton “ Duck ” Fletcher will enter his final season to play varsity baseball . Fletcher emerged as one of Northeast Arkansas ’ top players on the mound and at the plate last season finishing Best Under the Sun . Duck managed to lead his team to the regional tournament before being ousted by one of the state ’ s top teams in McCrory . It left a bitter taste in his mouth that the two-time all-conference player hopes will help motivate and propel his team in getting to this season ’ s state tournament .

Fletcher was one of many athletes that had to miss nearly an entire baseball season because of COVID . It was a lost year in which he missed the opportunity on playing with likely the league ’ s top team . ” COVID hitting three games into my freshmen season was a terrible experience ,” explained Easton . “ The team that year was full of a bunch of great guys on and off the field , and I wish I could have played a full season with them . I think it would have been very beneficial for me mainly to learn how to be a leader by watching the older guys .” The following year the team only returned one key senior who happened to be one of the top pitchers in the 2A-3 Conference . Beyond that , it was up to a list of young and inexperienced players including Duck to rebuild . As expected the season had its peaks and valleys . “ Sophomore season was expectedly a tough season for us . We were a very young team with little experience at the high school level . On top of that having a shoulder injury was quite the challenge personally . I was extremely unhappy with the outcome of my sophomore year , and I believe that feeling helped me have a drive to get better during the offseason . I finished my sophomore year out a lot stronger than it started . I still barely finished batting over . 300 . I knew being one of the main guys on the team that was something I needed to improve going into junior year . The second half of my sophomore season , I noticed that a lot of my success came when I began to get confident in the box . So , that is something I also took into consideration the next offseason .”
Fletcher was unable to pitch for the majority of his sophomore season as he suffered a shoulder impingement early . The team had barely had any offseason workouts with no type of throwing program which didn ’ t help in preparation for a tough year . Thankfully , volunteer coach Nolan Smith ( under the direction of Brad Brannen ) helped to step in and fill the void in leadership . Duck along with his teammates begin strenuous offseason workouts and a strong throwing program . It was Fletcher himself who begin to really hit the weight room hard . “ I was a much better player my junior year and helped lead the team to a much better year than my sophomore season . The poor outcome of sophomore season was something I thought about all offseason . I put in more work than I ever had and did everything I could to be the best I could for the team . As a team , we had a little bit of experience under our belts and were able to make it to the regional tournament .”
In addition to playing baseball , Easton found a love for the game of golf . Having never played the sport at all until late in junior high , Fletcher could be found consistently on a golf course as soon as baseball season ended in early May all the way into the winter of each year . “ I fell in love with golf my eighth-grade year and quickly became obsessed with the game . I
