He ’ d smoke for hours and watch a marigold sunset sink below the waves . I painted him once . I sneaked out the back door and hid behind a wedge of rock on the beach .
His features would do enchanting things when he was left alone to think . Lines would trace his face and his eyes would darken with thoughts . Though , it was probably the porch light .
He went through a whole pack of cigarettes that night , hunched over on the porch step , fixed in reveries . I painted in a frenzy . I was utterly obsessed and lost in my love for him that night .
I was so sure that nothing could pass our threshold . Nothing would dare . We got lost in the sand dunes and went too giddy with the sea air . We deemed ourselves untouchable .
