STEP INTO THE PAST The cemetery adjacent to the Old First Church in Old Bennington never gets old . Beautifully carved 18th-century headstones , the gravesite of poet Robert Frost , and that of a local man whose body was recovered after his ship ( the Titanic ) went down : there is much to see -- and ponder . Stroll ( or drive ) up Monument Ave past historic homes and take in the Bennington Battle Monument ( an elevator will take you up inside in season ).
BYWAYS AND BRIDGES Did you now that Vermont has more covered bridges per square mile than any state in the Union ? You ’ ll see why if you take a quick drive from the Monument to North Bennington via Silk Road and Murphy Road : you ’ ll rumble through three of these iconic bridges . You may want to stop for a picture at the last of them ( the Henry Bridge ), river fishermen sometimes included .
WHO ’ S HUNGRY ? Back in the car , pass through the charming village of North Bennington and take Route 67 east to Historic Route 7A in Shaftsbury . Head north and you ’ ll see Clear Brook Farm on your right in a couple of miles . Stop in for Vermont cheeses , fresh bread , and a fine selection of choice fruits and vegetables organically grown on the farm . Don ’ t miss a chance to immerse yourself in all things Scottish ( including good things to eat ) at Rablogan Castle of Scotland just north of Arlington . The Arlington Inn and Spa puts on a terrific Sunday brunch , too .
