The Future of Parkinson ’ s : Prevention Is Key

For individuals at increased risk of developing Parkinson ’ s , nothing is more urgent than research toward interventions that would prevent the disease from ever arising . Today , Parkinson ’ s science has advanced to support an array of current studies of people at risk . Our landmark Parkinson ’ s Progression Markers Initiative ( PPMI ) study is fine-tuning PD risk profiles and enabling the first prevention drug trials ( read more on pages 24 and 26 ). Additional efforts are ongoing to collect data on genetic and environmental contributors to Parkinson ’ s and to reduce exposures that increase likelihood of disease .
