HISTORIC LYNDHURST SHOW IN 2021
Breaking tradition was the norm due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 , and Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show was no exception to this worldwide phenomenon . Although the iconic dog show has been a mainstay in the city of New York since 1877 , holding strong through two World Wars , the 1918 Spanish flu , the 27-inch blizzard of 2006 , and more , a pivot was necessary with the COVID-19 still gripping the country . For the 2021 competition , Westminster took a reprieve from the show ’ s iconic Madison Square Garden venue for 67 acres of spacious park-like grounds just north of the city at the Lyndhurst Estate , a National Trust for the Historic Preservation property . A show rooted in 145 years of tradition may have relocated out of necessity , but turned out to be a bright spot for the exhibitors and television viewers .
The 2021 Westminster Weekend came to a memorable close with a Pekingese , a breed fancied by the Gould ’ s , winning Best in Show at the 145th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show .
The nearby Mario M . Cuomo Bridge was lit in purple to commemorate the Westminster events held in Tarrytown , NY .
