Young America Cardinals moving to Class B in 2022
By Kip Kovar Sports Editor The Young America Cardinals are one of two original amateur baseball teams in the town of Norwood Young America . The other team , the Norwood Indians , had their team fall apart before the 2016 season and has not been able to field a team since .
In 2021 , Norwood tried to rejoin the CRVL but the league voted as a whole to not accept them back in . The Norwood Indians will play an independent schedule in 2022 and try to rejoin the CRVL again the following season .
Over the past three years , Young America has been one of the top teams in Class C . The Cardinals have made deep runs at the state tournament each of the past three seasons as they have a core of young talent to build around .
Young America has reached the state tournament eight times in team history . The first time they did so was back in 1946 .
In 2021 , Young America ’ s season came to an end in the final weekend . For a second-straight year , they fell to St . Patrick .
Young America finished second in the 2021 Region 7C title after an up and down regular season . The Cardinals swept the Winsted Wildcats in a best-of-three-game series before securing a spot at the state tournament at the Region 7C Tournament .
Dillon Whittaker was named the team ’ s Pitcher of the Year . Isaac Hormann was named the team ’ s Most Valuable Player .
The Cardinals play their home games at one of the most unique parks in the state . Willkommen Park in Young America features a one-of-a-kind atmosphere to take in a ball game . Fans can speak for their famous ‘ Billy Burgers ’ as a local favorite during the games .
After a couple of outstanding years , Young America will be making the jump to Class B in the 2022 season for the next two years .
