How We Monitor Lead and Copper
About Lead and Copper
Lead is undetected in the water leaving the Town ’ s water plant , and the Town does not currently have any known lead service lines . However , lead plumbing can be found in some older buildings . Some places residents may find lead :
Older fixtures and valves : Lead can be found in older fixtures and valves . It can also be found in old solder where pipes are joined together that was made or installed before 1986 .
Service lines : The service line is the stretch of pipe that connects a property ’ s plumbing to the water main on the street . Older service lines may contain lead . Maintaining or replacing this pipe is the responsibility of the property owner .

How We Monitor Lead and Copper

The Jupiter Utilities Department collects and tests samples for lead and copper every three years .
The results of these tests are shared with the Florida Department of Health and to the public through this annual publication . The EPA mandates that 90 percent of homes show lead levels below 15 ppb . Our latest results shown in the table fall well below this threshold .
If present , elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems , especially for pregnant women and young children .
Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing . The Jupiter Utilities Department is responsible for providing high quality drinking water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components . When your water has been sitting for several hours , you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using water for drinking or cooking .
Reduce Your Lead Exposure
Use only cold water for drinking , cooking and making baby formula . Boiling water doesn ’ t remove lead from water .
Regularly clean your faucet ’ s screen ( aerator ).
Before drinking , flush your pipes by running your tap , taking a shower , doing laundry or a load of dishes .

If you are concerned about lead in your water , you may wish to have your water tested . Information on lead in drinking water , testing methods , and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline 1-800-426-4791 or at epa . gov / safewater / lead .

Stay Water-Wise
Discolored Water Rust or iron can build up in the plumbing system , causing brown or yellow water , stained fixtures and laundry , and a metallic flavor . If you regularly experience discolored water , especially immediately after periods of not using your water , have your plumber check for and replace old galvanized pipe . If no galvanized pipe is found , have your plumber thoroughly flush your water heater and household plumbing system .
Chemical Hazards Disposing of household chemicals – pesticides , paints , furniture strippers or other household products – can be challenging . Dumping them on the ground is bad for the environment , ground water , plants and animals . These can be properly disposed of at the Jupiter facility located on SWA Road off of Military Trail ( just a block from Donald Ross Road ). For more information , contact SWA at 561-697-2700 .
In Case of an Emergency To report an emergency , such as a water outage , discolored water or leaking fire hydrant , call the Town of Jupiter Utilities Emergency Line at 561-741-2609 .
Non-Emergency Concerns
Non-emergency concerns , such as billing issues , can be submitted using JupConnect , the Town ’ s customer relationship platform , at www . jupiter . fl . us / JupConnect or via the app available on all mobile platforms . Non-emergency concerns can also be reported by calling 561-741-2300 .
