Seed breeding research and development
The Nutrien Ag Solutions R , D & I program is dedicated to breeding and supplying a pipeline of elite varieties for Proven Seed . We have the longest running canola breeding program in Western Canada , so we know that developing successful varieties always starts with the best germplasm . Every variety and hybrid is put through rigorous testing to ensure quality before they are made available to growers through the Nutrien Ag Solutions network of retailers .
As we apply sophisticated agronomy and disease resistance traits , we help growers reach their goals of outright yield and yield stability .
Selecting what is right for Western Canada
Not only does Nutrien Ag Solutions have a proprietary canola breeding program , we also have relationships with breeding programs in other canola , cereals , soybeans , corn , forages , flax and mustard . These partnerships allow Proven Seed to select early , test intensively and advance lines successfully . The Proven Performance Trials program is the largest field trial program on the prairies and involves the widest assortment of crop lines .
Proven Performance Trials
Before Proven Seed advances any hybrid or variety , the line undergoes several years of testing internally by our R , D & I group at the same time as our breeding partners are testing them as well . We have twice the data to base our decisions on , and we do more testing to see how they perform with our farmers , on their land with their equipment . The final step , farmer run field scale trials , are coordinated by our great agronomists across the network . The results from all these trials give us the confidence to say which seed is going to perform best in a specific geography .
Field tours and training
While the hybrids and varieties are going through their field scale testing and final year of research trials , our Nutrien Ag Solutions agronomists are learning about the new lines . They get to see the new seed lines throughout the season at their own local trials and tours and at our research farms and sites across the prairies . They monitor these new hybrids and varieties throughout the season and provide their own , as well as farmer , insights on how they are performing . Our farm cooperator ’ s feedback is one of our best decision tools .
