Reimagining the New Graduate Residency Program

Early in 2022 , a small group of clinical education specialists ( CES ) at Children ’ s Hospital Colorado recognized these learning gaps and developed a plan to transition new graduate nurses into clinical practice . The strategy included providing opportunities for the mastery of foundational concepts that were absent from academic programs and delivering content using innovative , evidence-based teaching modalities . This collaboration provided an opportunity to unify departments across the system and mindfully expedite the development of critical thinking and applied clinical competency .
Led by Sara Hahn , MS , RN , CPN , the CES group partnered with professional development specialists to create the framework for the New Graduate Residency Reimagined . This team shared a vision to create meaningful and foundational education to advance the practice of novice nurses via a coordinated , systems-level approach . The accredited new graduate residency program was reevaluated for curriculum , skills competency and intentional sequencing , strategically weaving Children ’ s Colorado core values and Target Zero practices .
