CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY
The medical staff of Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth works closely with the cardiothoracic surgeons and the clinical teams of Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth in the care , treatment and recovery of patients needing cardiac surgery . Through collaborative efforts between the two hospital entities for streamlining processes and closely monitoring quality outcomes and patient experience indicators , the Fort Worth cardiovascular program will continue to lead Tarrant County and counties to the west in innovation , research and advancement of complex cardiovascular care .
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Program is equipped to handle serious and life-threatening cardiac emergencies . Commonly seen with complex aortic disease , the team is trained to provide advanced care for dissections and aneurysms . Taking swift action during a cardiac emergency is critical to patient outcomes . Offering services such as open heart surgery and less invasive techniques in Fort Worth , patients no longer have to travel to receive advanced cardiac care .

ROBOTIC SURGERY
Cardiothoracic surgery specialists on the medical staff perform robot-assisted techniques . This minimally invasive treatment option is available for a variety of heart and thoracic conditions and offers many potential benefits for the patient over traditional surgery such as shorter hospital stays , smaller incisions and quicker recovery time .
Through tiny incisions , robotic technology allows the surgeon to perform procedures with enhanced precision . The camera affixed to the robotic arm gives the surgeon a 3D view from a console with magnification ten times greater than the human eye . From the console , the surgeon also deploys and maneuvers laser tools and miniature scalpels .
FEVAR PERFORMED : ANOTHER FIRST IN TARRANT COUNTY
Both the heart and vascular capabilities continue to grow on the Fort Worth campus . As additional medical staff arrive to help meet the growing cardiovascular needs of the area , treating complex cardiovascular conditions becomes more readily accessible .
An example of this expanding ability is the first in Tarrant County four-vessel fenestrated EVAR ( FEVAR ) that was performed late in the fiscal year . This means patients in Tarrant County and the surrounding area will not have to travel great distances for complex aneurysm repair . The collaboration of the Fort Worth campus surgical team including anesthesiologists , surgical staff and critical care clinicians led to the current ability to treat the aortic valve down to the iliac bifurcation .
