HEART TRANSPLANTATION
MULTI-ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION
As one of the largest multi-specialty transplant centers in the country , Baylor Dallas is equipped with the necessary resources and expertise to coordinate and execute multi-organ transplants . This relatively rare procedure , transplanting two or more diseased organs during a single procedure , requires a teambased approach , closely collaborating with our transplant colleagues across multiple specialties . The Dallas transplant program has experience in heartkidney and heart-liver transplants .

EXPANDING THE DONOR POOL
Approximately 3,800 heart transplants are performed each year in the United States , but over 3,500 people in the US are on the transplant wait list , and many will wait over six months . To combat this critical issue , Baylor University Medical Center ’ s Transplant Program takes an aggressive approach to recipient and donor selection and continues to explore new avenues for viable donors . The dedication of the Baylor Dallas transplant team resulted in offering the shortest wait time from time of listing to transplant in Texas , with more than 34 % of patients receiving a transplant within 30 days and more than 78 % of patients receiving a transplant within one year .*

HEART-TO-HEART PROGRAM
Eight years ago , William C . Roberts , MD , MACC , an internationally recognized authority on cardiac pathology and executive director of the Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute , followed his heart and began a program that has touched the lives of more than 180 heart transplant recipients . Heartto-Heart is a first-of-its kind interactive program for heart transplant patients that ’ s been emulated across the country and around the world . Baylor Dallas heart transplant patients have been amazed and overwhelmed by the opportunity to hold their old diseased heart in their hands , listening to Dr . Roberts describe what went wrong with their old heart and learning how they can protect the health of their new heart .

ALL IN : Targeting Inflammation and Alloimmunity in Heart Transplant Recipients with Tocilizumab This is a Phase II , prospective , multicenter , randomized , placebo-controlled clinical trial . The primary objective is to assess the efficacy of tocilizumab ( Actemra ) on post-transplant outcomes . The drug , currently FDA approved for rheumatologic conditions , is hypothesized to improve post-transplant survival rate by reducing incidence of rejection , donorspecific antibodies , and hemodynamic compromise .
