LEADING WITH NEW TREATMENT OPTIONS
For cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment , innovation leads the way at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas ’ Department of Interventional Cardiology . In the hospital ’ s 20th anniversary year as the first dedicated heart and vascular hospital in North Texas , the interventional cardiology team celebrated many “ firsts ” in fiscal year 2022 . Some advances in care were “ first in Texas ,” and others “ first in North Texas .” There were new treatment options nationally recognized as leading cardiac care with only a few other hospitals across the United States also offering some of the newer procedures and devices . In many instances , the commercial “ firsts ” immediately followed FDA approval as several members of the medical staff were principal investigators for original clinical trials and studies that lead to the FDA approval .
Fiscal Year 2022 “ Firsts ”
• 1st Shockwave clinical trial enrollment in the US
• 1st in Texas to use coronary intravascular lithotripsy catheter post FDA approval
• 1st in Texas and 2nd in US to use the only drug eluting stent using biocompatible polymer post FDA approval
• 1st in Texas and 3rd in US to use next generation intravascular ultrasound system
• 1st in Texas to use the paclitaxel coated PTCA balloon catheter following the Agent™ study
• 1st in Texas to use the thinnest available drug-eluting stent system with next generation deliverability post FDA approval
As the pandemic waned early in calendar year 2022 , clinical trials and research grew quickly to near pre-pandemic numbers . More than 80 interventional cardiology studies were managed on the Dallas campus in fiscal year 2022 , some ending in the fiscal year and others continuing into fiscal year 2023 . Several studies were recognized as “ top-enrolling ” in the US .

INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY CASE VOLUME REACHES PRE-PANDEMIC NUMBERS
While the pandemic dampened elective procedures for all hospitals , the team on the Dallas campus maintained a steady number of interventional cardiology cases with volumes reaching near pre-pandemic numbers by Spring 2022 .
The 11 interventional cardiology labs in Dallas are well-equipped with several available for both heart and vascular care as well as electrophysiology ( EP ) cases . Four of the labs are heart and vascular capable , five are EP capable , one is used for endovascular cases , and two are hybrid rooms . The labs offer advanced image quality and radiation lowering equipment for patient and staff safety .
Several years ago , the department became an early adopter of the first and only FDA-cleared medical device to bring robotic-assisted precision to coronary angioplasty procedures . Robotics improves the accuracy of stent and balloon placements and reduces radiation exposure to the physicians during the procedure .
In addition , labs are equipped with digital subtraction technology , intravascular ultrasound , intracardiac echocardiography and coronary flow wire ( FFR )― equipment which enhances data accuracy and accessibility .
