SLEEP CENTER
The Sleep Foundation estimates 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea , a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts . Symptoms include loud snoring and tiredness during the day . According to the Sleep Foundation more than 80 % of cases of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea are undiagnosed . The organization also estimates between 60 to 90 % of people with sleep apnea also have obesity . Left untreated , sleep apnea significantly increases the risk of heart arrhythmias ( irregular heartbeats ) and cardiovascular disease .
Millions of people , including thousands of North Texans , live with some of the effects of obstructive sleep apnea , including interrupted sleep , trouble concentrating , daytime sleepiness , and chronic headaches . Repeated pauses in breathing rob the lungs of oxygen , adding significant stress on the body . The results can be serious health complications such as cardiovascular disease , heart failure , stroke , and an irregular heartbeat .
Recognizing this growing health concern among North Texans , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas opened the Sleep Center to offer advanced monitoring technology and treatment for a wide spectrum of sleep disorders supported by a multidisciplinary provider team . The center is led by Eneida Harrison , MD , Medical Director . The center is part of a larger initiative by the hospital to respond to the growing cardiovascular health needs of North Texans .
The center provides in-lab and home-based testing to evaluate patients for a variety of sleep disorders :

• Central sleep apnea

• Circadian rhythm disorders

• Delayed sleep phase syndrome

• Insomnia

• Narcolepsy

• Obstructive sleep apnea ( OSA )

• Parasomnias

• Periodic limb movement disorder

• Restless leg syndrome

• Shift work sleep disorder

• Snoring

Using a full range of specialized interventions :

• Home sleep study

• Nocturnal polysomnography

• Split night study

• Titration study ( CPAP , Bi-level or ASV )

• Multiple sleep latency testing ( MSLT )

• Maintenance of wakefulness test ( MWT )

• Ventilatory support study
