PROMOTING HEALTHCARE CAREERS
Title 1 school program
Throughout the school year , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas hosted students enrolled in health , science and technology programs at Title 1 schools . Title 1 funding is available to schools with at least 40 % of their students meeting low income criteria established by the federal poverty census . The funding is designed to assist schools in meeting the educational goals of low-income students .
In fiscal year 2022 , 20 students rotated throughout the various departments to learn about the dayto-day innerworkings of a hospital . This eight-week program gives students an opportunity to have hands-on experience in the industry and apply the didactive information they receive throughout the school year . The students are hosted and precepted by multiple departments to learn about healthcare careers as well as the level of education and skills required . “ One of the things we like to do at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital is engage the high school students to give them an opportunity to experience jobs they may have not considered ,” says Art Signo , MS , BSN , RN , NPD-BC , Director of Education at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital . “ They normally think of the typical jobs such as doctors and nurses . We want to introduce them to respiratory therapists , physical therapists , patient care techs , and the laboratory as well as the other positions we have available .”
Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas believes it is important to provide opportunities for youth to consider healthcare careers . The Community Health Needs Assessment indicated an opportunity to improve awareness for the broad variety of healthcare careers . Improving awareness and exposure to these careers , specifically with at-risk youth , may lead to improved socioeconomic futures for families .
Over the years , several students who participated in the hospital educational programs have enrolled in college to pursue healthcare careers . Several have gone on to graduate from medical school or have pursued nursing or allied health careers . Also , several past program participants have returned to Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas as staff members .
Many of the students who have participated in this program have gone on to pursue healthcare careers . In fact , some of these students are now a member of our Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital team . Of those who have participated , Garland Independent School District reported that 202 students have completed their post-high school education or are in the process to pursue healthcare careers . One of the students involved in the FY22 program reflected on her experience . She states , “ This program has been beneficial for me . I got a first-hand experience of how doctors , nurses and everyone in the hospital system interact to create a working system that benefits both its patients and the environment they ’ ve been put in .”
