INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY
The regional reputation for the interventional cardiology services at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth continues to grow as the referrals have grown over the past several years . PCI continues to be the favored treatment option for patients with simple and complex ischemic cardiovascular disease . With advanced equipment and a broad complement of stents available , including the availability of the smallest drug-eluting stent at 2mm , interventional cardiologists on the medical staff collaborate closely with referring providers on the treatment options available for patients .
Several interventional cardiology “ firsts ” have been celebrated at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth . One of the notable “ firsts ” include being the first in Fort Worth and Tarrant County to use intravascular lithotripsy for the treatment of severely calcified coronary artery plaques .

This new system is an innovative technology for the treatment of cardiac patients and was recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of severely calcified coronary artery plaques . The therapy is similar to the therapy used to break up kidney stones and is known as Intravascular Lithotripsy ( IVL ). The device uses a balloon to deliver sonic pressure waves that can pass through soft arterial tissue to “ preferentially disrupt ” calcified plaque and optimize stent placement . This allows for a safer delivery of stents . The Journal of the American College of Cardiology published an article in 2021 that stated patients with an advanced form of coronary artery disease benefited from treatment that used sonic pressure waves to break up hardened blockages in the heart .
PERIPHERAL VASCULAR AND PERCUTANEOUS PERIPHERAL INTERVENTION
The interventional cardiologists and vascular surgeons on the medical staff share use of the cath labs for peripheral vascular and percutaneous peripheral intervention .
Using the specialized fluoroscopy of the cath lab , peripheral vascular intervention ( PVI ) procedures are performed to help restore blood flow to the lower extremities . Percutaneous peripheral intervention ( PPI ) may also be performed in the cath lab . PPI is another treatment option for peripheral artery disease .
