We act honestly . We serve faithfully . We are in it together . We never settle . These are our daily reality . It is times of stress and challenge that one sees the true essence of an institution , of those who lead and those who serve . From my viewpoint , the true essence of this institution is that those who lead also serve , and those who serve become leaders .
Fiscal year 2022 was full of opportunity , challenge and change . The service , leadership , sacrifice , and “ heart ” of Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas and Fort Worth were bright points of light throughout the time of pandemic . And its Board of Managers could not be prouder of this institution and all who are part of it .
This was a very good year despite the challenges . Please permit me to list a few recognitions . I encourage you to think about those who work faithfully to produce the patient care , safety and results that lead to these recognitions .

On a personal note , I , and every Chair of the Board of Managers who preceded me , had the privilege of working with Dr . Kevin Wheelan , Chief Medical Officer ( CMO ). We are grateful to Dr . Wheelan for his years of commitment to the mission and excellence . Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas would not be the same institution without his years of service and leadership and his unrelenting focus upon excellence and progress in all areas . Thank you , Dr . Wheelan . Your wisdom and leadership were a joy to me and the entire Board .
Fiscal year 2022 has given us a new CMO , Dr . Jeffrey Schussler , and the transition has been a good one . Dr . Schussler has embraced the challenge , and the entire Board is grateful for his demonstrated commitment to continued excellence and further improvement .
Finally , I hope that you find this FY22 outcomes book interesting , informative and perhaps even inspirational . Change is inevitable . Founded on faith , we and the entire Baylor Scott & White system are a place to which those of all faiths and those of none may come with equal confidence . We are here to serve , to improve health and life . It is a privilege .

The last year has been full of change . We are ( hopefully ) seeing the close of the worst chapter of the pandemic , and while not over , it would appear that things are moving in a positive direction . I have never been prouder of the people who work in our hospital and care for our patients , given the challenges that we have had to overcome in the last two and a half years .
The system , and our hospital , have weathered issues related to staffing shortages , supply chain issues , rising and falling COVID-19 cases , and all pulled together throughout . It is a testament to our commitment to care that we have managed to continue our traditions of excellence in service , outcomes and patient experience .
Some highlights over the past year include Fortune and IBM Watson naming Baylor Dallas one of the “ 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals 2022 ” and Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas 4th Magnet designation – few hospitals can say that they have achieved this honor .
It has been a little over a year since I have taken over for Dr . Wheelan as our Chief Medical Officer . He was our first CMO , and my hope has been to continue his legacy of leadership and continue to strive to promote the ideals that he encouraged and supported .
We are continuing to promote and expand our Centers of Excellence , and along with our Center for Valve Disorders , we have expanded or started several new centers to promote cardiovascular health , including our Heart Rhythm Center , Hypertension Center and Sleep Center .
In November 2021 , we opened up our cath lab in Waxahachie and have already expanded faster than we anticipated . We broke ground on our heart and vascular hospital in Waxahachie and are anticipating new growth in that location in 2023 . Our Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth continues to excel and expand . Within the last year they started their LVAD program and will begin an ECPR program , providing cardiovascular care for some of the sickest patients .
Overall , it has been a challenging and rewarding year . I look forward to many more to come .
