Language access laws at every level of government have established the basic rights of individuals to communicate , understand , and be understood in the language they prefer and feel most powerful in to articulate their needs and perspectives . In San Francisco , respecting each person ’ s basic language rights forms the foundation for the policies and services outlined in the LAO . Living out these principles and values is what makes this real and meaningful .
As COVID-19 evolves and morphs into variants with unknown mutations , recovering from and living with the pandemic requires better planning and language access support for LEP , vulnerable , and disabled communities . Ensuring that there are no gaps or breakdowns in delivering critical information and services during emergencies , pandemics , and natural disasters will secure public health and safety for everyone .
Equal access to timely , accurate information and services , and meaningful , inclusive engagement of all residents are key to ensuring that the City ’ s post-pandemic economic recovery efforts benefit ALL communities and ALL San Franciscans , regardless of language or status .
