The Mohawks of Piggott , Arkansas finished with a paltry record of 1-9 a season ago . They lose three all-conference players in Logan White OL / DL , Ethan Ralph WR / DB , and Hayden Emerson WR / DB . Mohawk Coach Don Simmons feels that he returns several key players from last season ’ s group . The returning Mohawk ’ s include : WR / DB Joe Carter who is a two-year starter and fastest player on team . DE / OL Will Vancil who is a two-year starter at defensive end that plays very aggressive . Another two-year starter in OL / DL Josh Redd is big and physical . OL / DE Noah Roberts has experience splitting time between center and right tackle . WR / FS Tyler Smith returns and is pegged as a possession-type receiver by Coach Simmons . RB / OLB Walker Johnson started on defense last year and split time at running back . DE / OL Lawson Tompkins is a very smart player on both sides of the ball with experience . On offense Piggott will run out of the spread with one running back and four receivers . “ Our offensive line should be pretty good with three to four returners ,” said Simmons . “ Carpenter and Johnson are top returners at skill positions .” Coach Simmons has concerns about a lack of depth due to low numbers . Simmons said that defensively the team will mix it up but primarily play out of the 4-3 while trying to be aggressive keeping the opposing offense guessing . The defensive line is the team ’ s strength with Carpenter being a lock-down cornerback . “ We must stay healthy because of our lack of depth . If so , and our skill people can come along , we feel we can compete and win more games and hopefully make the playoffs .” Look for the Mohawks to be improved but to still miss the playoffs with too many hurdles to climb .
The Corning Bobcats went 3-6 in 2021 . They will look to improve as Farrell Shelton looks to make his mark in his second season as the head coach for Corning . The Bobcats return multiple players from last season ’ s group . There are two players that have been three-year starters which return for their senior campaign in guard Ethan Jordan and tackle Blane Ray . They will look to lead in the trenches . Additionally , Coach Shelton has multiple experienced starters returning that have started the last two seasons in quarterback John Swint , running back Landon Lucas , tight end Eli Mason , center Tim Hufford , full back Jackson Davis and guard Grady Pennington . “ Our offense will be run heavy oriented as we return five starters on the offensive line ,” exclaimed Farrell . “ Senior running back Lucas Landon will carry the load and will be backed up by Jackson Davis , who can play many other positions on offense and will be on the field somewhere . Along with Jackson , sophomores Jakob Cox and Hayden Cox will help us in the backfield too . John Swint will quarterback the offense in his second year and has really showed a lot of improvement from last season as everything is slowing down for him , and he can process the play much better this year . John gives us another threat to running the ball . Junior Jace Couch and senior Bryson Harris will be on the outside and both of them give us confidence as possession receivers along with being able to stretch the field . Defensively we are a three-man front and will rely heavily on Ethan Jordan , Blane Ray , Eli Mason , Haydon Cox and Seth Green in those positions . Our linebackers are Jackson Davis , Grady Pennington , Landon Lucas , Rodney Rappert and Jakob Cox . Our secondary will consist of John Swint , Bryson Harris , Jason Liau and Jace Couch . The key to our defense will be the success of the defensive line as that is where we have the most experience . We lost both our kicker and punter from last year so this will be an ongoing search to find out who can fill the shoes from last year . Our concern is our depth as we only have 25 players on the senior high team . We feel that we can compete within in our conference but injuries and getting the young players up to speed will be a key for us . Our conference is very physical and well coached so each week we have to make sure that we are practicing and preparing with a purpose .” NEA Sports likes Corning ’ s chances of moving up the conference standings , but because of a depth issues , the Bobcats are just a couple injuries away in finding themselves in deep trouble .
