Emergency Department
We are thrilled to share the completion of the Emergency Department expansion at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Brenham . The $ 2.3 million , 5,000 square-foot project was funded entirely by your generosity .
“ The renovation will help enhance quality of care and safety for both patients and staff , and improve the patient experience ,” Mystan Gurkin , MD , chief of medical staff in Brenham . “ Patients will find more private space for treatment than was previously available . The expansion includes a new safe space to provide care for patients who might be experiencing a mental health crisis . Thanks to our donors ’ generosity , we will be able to support the needs of Brenham as it continues to grow .”
Chest Compression Device
When seconds count during a medical emergency , the right tool in the hands of first responders and emergency room staff helps save lives — especially in smaller , rural communities like Brenham . Thanks to a generous grant from the Lower Colorado River Authority , the Emergency Department on our Brenham campus received a new chest compression system for CPR scenarios .
The device administers higher quality chest compressions than manual CPR , and can help sustain circulation during prolonged resuscitation attempts without the need to switch CPR providers , allowing more time for diagnosis and treatment . In addition , the device improves the safety of medical staff by reducing the intense physical demands of manual CPR and limiting staff exposure during diagnostic tests such as x-rays .
In 2021 , Brenham resident Brittany Weyand was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 30 years old . “ I just broke down ,” she says . “ There wasn ’ t much else I could do . You never think you ’ ll hear those words until it happens to you .”
