TRIBUTE TO KERMIT ROCKETT
6 played , and my ball ended up on the upper side of the # 5 green . Kermit looked at me and with all seriousness said " You need to hit this putt with the shadow of your putter ." Of course he was right as the slope and speed of the green took the ball right off the bottom side . After that first outing we became fast friends , and often enjoyed getting together with our wives for dinner . Kermit got me involved with the Greens Committee at LGCC , which eventually led to my being a member of the board and having chairmanship of the committee . He worked tirelessly for the betterment of our club , and his community . We miss him sorely and will forever have him in our hearts .
Harvey Galloway Here is my story with respect to Kermit ... alias Mr . Lexington Golf & CC !
When Linda and I were checking out Lexington for a retirement location in 1998 , we visited the Lexington Country Club one afternoon . It was my birthday , July 21 . When we were talking with Grover Smith , another legend , in the pro shop , along comes Kermit . He introduced himself and asked if we would like a tour of the club . We said yes ... so off we went ! When we were getting ready to leave Linda told Kermit it was my birthday and could we eat dinner at the club . He said “ sure “ I will make the arrangements and you can be my guest ! We came to the club that evening and had a great meal ... then went to LimeKiln to watch “ Stonewall .” That was the clincher , we bought a house a month or so later and have been happy to have been in this area for the past 25 years . Thanks to the warm welcome from Kermit and the local flavor from Grover ! As the old saying goes “ ‘‘ tis better to have loved and lost than never love at all “. We all loved Grover and Kermit .
Mike Evans Where to begin in trying to convey what Kermit meant to me as a friend , mentor , and partner / opponent on the golf course ? Kermit worked tirelessly to make LGCC the best it could be . I read today others referring to him as LGCC ’ s Mr . Golf and I heartily concur with the appropriateness of that moniker for him . And , Kermit was so much more . He loved his family , his community , and this wonderful country in a way that motivated him to active leadership in numerous capacities . Everyone who encountered him is a little better person for the experience .
Rick Leech Kermit has had a tremendous influence on me as a member of the golf community and it is hard to grasp his loss . He was also a great friend to my wife and me , sharing so many memories . Will always remember you Kermit .
Thom Gill It is hard to imagine LGCC and Rockbridge County without my friend Kermit . Kermit was the first person to welcome us to LGCC , and to introduce us to folks at the club , as well as to many aspects of “ the County ''. Senior Men ’ s golf , the annual Cheraw Golf trip , orange ball , captain ’ s choice with string , the Palmer Ice Cream Supper ( don ’ t refer to it as a social event , please ), our monthly Poker Club , Marty ’ s cookies … I could go on . Kermit was the best dad , the best grandfather , the best greens reader , the best fundraiser , the best poker player , the best Ice Cream Supper volunteer getter , and basically many folks best friend - what a guy . I will miss him - a lot !
Carroll Comstock Kermit ' s generosity is known by all . But we also knew that when he needed a putt to win a golf match or a certain card to win a poker hand his generosity took a backseat to winning -- and he was a winner ! Oh , how many times he took me down !
