Lance Collins joins the Society for Science Board of Trustees

Innovation Campus Vice President and Mechanical Engineering Professor Lance Collins has joined the board of Society for Science , a nonprofit 501 ( c )( 3 ) membership organization focused on promoting the understanding and appreciation of science .
Collins came to Virginia Tech in 2020 to launch the Virginia Tech campus in the greater Washington , D . C ., area . Prior to that appointment , he served as Dean of Engineering at Cornell University .
“ I plan to dedicate my time to increasing access to the Society for girls and underrepresented minority students , who historically have not participated in STEM at the levels they could if given the opportunity ,” Collins said in a press release from the society .
The Society for Science , founded in 1921 , is a champion for science , dedicated to expanding scientific literacy , effective STEM education and scientific research .
The Society provides concise , accurate , and inspirational science news and opportunities to nearly 100,000 subscribing members , 70,000 competition alumni , and millions of unique online visitors and social media followers .
STAFF AWARDS
Allison Jones , Program Coordinator for Mechanical Engineering in the Northern Virginia Center , received the 2022 Virginia Tech Outstanding Staff Award for the greater Washington , D . C ., metro area . The award is given annually to recognize the excellence of one recipient among Virginia Tech staff working in the DC region .
Diana Israel , Program Support Technician , has received the Administrative Award from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering Staff Association . The award followed nominations from multiple co-workers who acknowledged Diana ’ s commitment to excellence in her work and providing exceptional support .
