PROTECTING YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES
With the portability of electronic devices , loss can happen quickly and easily . Laptops and PDAs , along with most video game systems are easy to carry and conceal . The following tips will help to protect your valuable electronic equipment :
• Register your electronics with the Department of Public Safety and have them engraved for free .
• Keep receipts and other pertinent records in a separate location from the electronic devices .
• Keep your doors locked and do not let strangers into your residence hall room or apartment
• Report suspicious situations to the Department of Public Safety immediately .
• Do not prop open exterior doors .
• Be aware of who knows about your electronic devices . Register computers with Computer Services along with the Department of Public Safety .
What if my electronic device is stolen ?: Call the Department of Public Safety at 517.264.7800 or ‘ 0 ’ from a SHU phone .
• Report that your electronic device was stolen and if it is registered with the Department of Public Safety .
• A Public Safety Officer will contact you to complete an incident report .
• The Public Safety Officer will ask if you want a police report along with the Public Safety report . Most insurance companies will accept the Department of Public Safety ’ s report .
• Get an incident report number from the Public Safety Officer .
• Contact the Director of Public Safety at 517.264.7194 for a copy of the report . Reports are generally available within 48 hours .
• Contact your insurance company .
