WELCOME !
We often get asked , “ Well , what exactly is a Shire anyways ?!”
A Shire is a county seat or courthouse by many definitions . In Bennington County , we have the honor of actually having two courthouses - one in the Southshire in Bennington and one in the Northshire in Manchester . Hence , The Shires of Southwestern Vermont .
Upon further research you would also find that Shire also means an ‘ official charge ’ a ‘ district under a governor ’, and a ‘ care ’ - to be a steward of . When I think of The Shires , I think of the stewardship and care our residents and travelers take of the land , the people and the communities . As you traverse this entrance into Vermont , take a moment to appreciate the 240 + years of stewardship in the region .
This beautiful region between the Taconic and Green Mountains , anchored by Bennington and Manchester , is a collective of 17 quintessential Vermont towns and villages connected by a scenic ribbon of highway known as Historic Route 7A ( now The Shires of Vermont Byway ).
Surrounded by Vermont ’ s famous mountain range and enriched by the many waterways including the Battenkill and Walloomsac , The Shires of Southwestern Vermont is world-renowned as a four-season destination for those seeking the authentic Vermont experience . Equally attractive to both residents and visitors of the area is the relative closeness to major metropolitan areas .
The people of The Shires look forward to welcoming you to this place we call home .
