• JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP •
Junior Showmanship competition is for children ages 9-18 years of age . In this competition , the young people are judged solely on their handling skills independent of the traits of the dog . While handling , care and responsible ownership are important lessons of Junior Showmanship , learning social skills and sportsmanship , as well as the opportunity to bond with one ’ s dog are also key components of this program .
These young handlers must demonstrate breed knowledge in presentation of the dog as well as economy of motion . The judge is considering how well the handlers present their dogs with regard to control , teamwork as well as composure and unexaggerated movement . The goal for the Juniors , like the best adult handlers , is to enhance their dog ’ s qualities to the judge without using distracting , unnecessary motions .
Junior Handlers will be invited to enter if they have been awarded Best Junior Handler ( from the winners of a minimum of two competing classes ) at four ( 4 ) or more AKC Licensed or Member shows between November 1 , 2019 and February 15 , 2021 , and who were at least 9 years old and under 18 if prior to March 1 . Additionally , if a Junior turns 18 on or after March 1 , 2020 , the wins will count up until they turn 19 or February 15 , 2021 , whichever is earliest .
