LYNDHURST
THE LYNDHURST ESTATE : A LEGACY IN THE DOG FANCY
The Lyndhurst estate — home to America ’ s Finest Gothic Revival mansion — will be the site of the 145th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show , presented by Purina Pro Plan ® , the 8th Annual Masters Agility Championship , and the 6th Annual Masters Obedience Championship from June 11-13 , 2021 .
Located just 25 miles north of New York City in Tarrytown , New York , Lyndhurst boasts 67-acres of park-like grounds nestled along the Hudson River . The Gilded Age railroad tycoon Jay Gould purchased the property in 1880 as a Spring residence for his family when not in residence at their Fifth Avenue mansion .
The estate was designed in 1838 by renowned architect Alexander Jackson Davis , the Frank Lloyd Wright of the 19th century , in Gothic Revival style . Lyndhurst was one of the first homes to be built in the Hudson Valley as a romantic retreat . Earlier noteworthy occupants at Lyndhurst include former New York City Mayor William Paulding and merchant George Merritt .
Jay and Helen Gould ’ s six children : George , Edwin , Helen , Howard , Anna , and Frank were all devoted to purebred dogs . All the brothers were breeders of note and had prize-winning dogs at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show during the late 1890s and early 1900s . Helen even built Frank a kennel at Lyndhurst for his St . Bernards following the death of their father in 1892 . Daughters Helen and Anna were keen owners of many Pekingese dogs throughout their lives at Lyndhurst .
The property was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation , a privately funded not-for-profit , in 1961 , after the death of Anna Gould , the Duchess of Tallyrand-Perigord , the last surviving child of Jay Gould . While this is the first time the Westminster Kennel Club dog show has been held outside of Manhattan since 1877 , the Lyndhurst property is no stranger to dog shows , notably the Westchester Kennel Club hosted dog shows on the grounds from 1973 to 2009 .
