Fred J . Van Milligen , Ph . D .

Fred J . Van Milligen is the Vice President of Research and Development for VIAVI Solutions ’ Optical Security and Performance Products business segment . Fred has an extensive background in thin film coatings with a particular emphasis in their design and fabrication in optical systems for scientific and military applications as well as advanced laser systems . He leads a team of approximately 90 technologists located in Santa Rosa , California and Rochester , New York . Fred ’ s team is responsible for materials research and the development of new products and technologies for high performance filter and optical diffuser products . Those products enable Anti- Counterfeiting , 3D Sensing , Consumer Electronics , Healthcare , Aerospace , and Defense applications for governments and leading global commercial entities .
Before he joined VIAVI Solutions in 1998 , Fred worked at Boeing as a Senior Scientist specializing in beam control systems and component design for high energy laser systems . Prior to joining Boeing , Fred held several research and engineering positions at United Technologies Research Center .
Fred completed a PhD in Optical Sciences in 1985 from the University of Arizona , where he had the privilege of studying under Professor H . Angus Macleod . His undergraduate degree was in Mathematics and Physics from Western Illinois University . Fred ’ s employer , VIAVI Solutions , is funding two graduate student scholarships at $ 10,000 each and in honor of Dr . Angus Macleod . This is a 10-year scholarship commitment by VIAVI Solutions .
