The Kinsers
This is one of those very steep and challenging back yards in Pinehurst . Terracing with a combination of river rock and stone steps was about the only solution to recapture ground . Stone adds texture , covers the bare ground where nothing will grow and is easy to maintain . This kind of project can be quite expensive to undertake with part of the cost being equipment logistics . However , the end result is beautiful and functional . This work was done by Grayson Plant and Stone Landscaping .
The Shireys
This is a long swale running down the slope to the front yard of their house in the Meadows . Buried in the swale is a large dry pond meant to hold 50 gallons or more during a large storm . The swale directs the water away from the house and the neighbor ’ s , into the front yard and down to the swale at the road . The deep roots of native shrubs and perennials also help hold the water to allow it to perk rather than continue as run-off .
On the other side of the yard , another long swale ends in a dry pond . Both swales are designed to handle strong rain events although any stormwater landscape practice can be put to the test during the kind of storms that we have had recently e . g . 4 inches in one event . Often over time , swales will need additional stone or adjustments to the flow pattern . This work was done by Residential Reforestation .
These residents all participated in the Waterside Buffer Rebate program where homeowners are rewarded for using best stormwater practices and including native plants in the landscaping . The first step is to get an evaluation and plan from Erin Johnson at buffer . lakelinganore @ gmail . com . With your Buffer Rebate evaluation summary , you will receive a list of resources including where to buy construction and plant materials . You can also receive a list of professionals qualified to do this kind of work . The rebate program is first come , first served . The next cycle begins March 1 , 2022 . You may only apply once . The application for 2022 will be available January 1 .
