FRIENDS OF THE LAKE
2020 Water Quality Review
During 2020 , the Friends of the Lake Water Quality sub-committee kept a close eye on water quality issues through the Lake Linganore community . Specifically , we :
• Managed a team of commercial and Maryland Department of the Environment ( MDE ) laboratories , scholar experts , county staff , and LLA to monitor lake water conditions and keep residents safe and informed .
• Oversaw more than 100 daily ( including weekends and holidays ) sampling and testing events of Lake Linganore at Nightingale Beach for E . coli and cyanobacteria ( blue-green algae ) from Memorial Day to Labor Day .
• Provided daily ( including weekends and holidays ) community reporting of Lake Linganore water quality results on the Friends of the Lake ’ s Facebook page and the Lake Linganore Association ’ s web site . The association also implemented a red / green flag system for at-a-glance interpretation of water quality results on the LLA website .
• Sponsored monthly monitoring by Hood College students of algae and cyanobacteria populations and biological conditions in Lake Anita Louise and Lake Merle . Maryland Environmental Services completed biological monitoring of Lake Linganore as dredging continued at the lake .
• Coordinated cyanobacteria toxin analyses in MDE ’ s laboratories when sample cell counts were elevated .
• Delayed the planned 2020 Lake Anita Louise barley straw pilot study due to the Covid-19 pandemic . The pilot is now planned for early spring 2021 .
• Facilitated Hood College ’ s report “ Water Quality Report 2019 ” ( June 2020 ).
• Continue to collaborate with Hood College ’ s mathematics department to develop a model to predict E . coli risk using historical precipitation data ( still in progress ).
• Coordinated completion of a bathymetric survey of Lake Merle .
• Participated with the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council ( ITRC ) Harmful Cyanobacteria Bloom team to write an online technical guidance document for lake water managers and organizations like LLA on prevention , management , and communication of lake water blooms .
