" Industrial Nouveau : Burnley aims to reignite Burnley ’ s post-industrial spaces and the Leeds Liverpool Canal through a circular textile industry model . Our thesis oversees a complex of four 19th century and Early 20th century former textile mills and proposes a revival of Burnley ’ s lost industrial identity through a reinvention of the textile mill ; providing a circular prototype system that demonstrates how a combined resale , reuse and recycling process can alleviate the impacts of textile waste derived from ‘ fastfashion ’." which follows the topography down into Burnley ’ s town centre .
The retrofitting of grade II listed Trafalgar Mill has seen the internal space transformed into a naturally lit atrium with perforated timber balustrades and connecting glulam bridges .
The project also aims to demonstrate the capabilities of historic buildings alongside England ’ s historic waterways , retaining their embodied carbon and retrofitting them for new uses . The proposal is a mix of retrofitted spaces and new interventions .
These new interventions have been carefully considered in their materiality and structure to lower their embodied carbon . Utilising a ‘ lighttouch ’ approach , these interventions use locally sourced , demountable sikta spruce glulam timber beams , cross laminate timber ( CLT ) floorplates , and walls to create a lightweight frame that sits upon the existing stone and cast-iron structures without needing to further strengthen the foundations . Given the industrial typology of the thesis , the internal processes require large spans which have been achieved through the use of lightweight inverted timber trusses , consisting of a main arch beam with secondary supporting beams . Large glulam sawtooth northlights span some industrial areas providing high levels of natural light . These industrial spaces have been designed with adaptability in mind to add or take away from the structure when necessary .
A new urban connection has been provided over the canal , through the creation of an undulating glulam portal framed bridge with fabric canopy ,
