East Arlington

QUINTESSENTIAL TOWNS IN THE SHIRES

East Arlington
Among the first settlers here were Remember Baker of the Green Mountain Boys and his wife Desire ( and their son Ozi ). Baker built a gristmill on the Roaring Branch , and though the original mill burned down , its 18th-century replacement is still there , now as The Mill , a working space for creative people .
East Arlington ’ s Kelly Stand Road ( closed in winter ) is the gateway to the Green Mountain National Forest . Hiking , fishing , camping , and canoeing are popular activities at the 1600-acre Grout Pond Recreational Area . You can continue on the road towards Stratton or , if you come back down , recharge your calories at the Chocolatorium , then head north toward Sunderland and Manchester through the Chiselville covered bridge : it ’ s just one narrow lane , and there ’ s a one dollar fine if you drive faster than a walk – but really , why would you want to rush ?
