Hiking in The Shires

Featuring a range of experiences suitable for a wide variety of fitness , hiking in The Shires is a great way to discover the beauty of our region and to unwind and unplug .
Northshire : Equinox Preservation Trust A variety of hiking trails from easy to difficult . Trail head located in Manchester Village just past Burr and Burton Academy on West Union Street . Map kiosk at trailhead . Leashed dogs allowed .
Northshire : Lye Brook Trail Leading to a 125 ’ waterfall , this mostly wooded trail is about 1.8 miles long and a local favorite . Rocks can be slippery and climbing the waterfall is not recommended . Trail head is located on Glen Rd off of East Manchester Road in Manchester . A moderately challenging hike .
Southshire : Mile Around Woods A lovely mellow walk through woods and fields with pastoral views . Trail head located in North Bennington , just past the Park-McCullough Governor ’ s Mansion located on West Street .
Southshire : Harmon Hill ( Appalachian Trail / Long Trail ) A challenging hike with steep initial climb . Following the AT / LT south from Route 9 in Bennington , hike is about 2 miles to the top of Harmon Hill with amazing views of Bennington and the valley . Trailhead located on Route 9 east of Bennington .
