 STEM CELL RESEARCH ADVANCES IN POLITICALLY CHARGED ENVIRONMENT
 With limited Parkinson ’ s therapies in development , stem cell research is one of few bright spots in the R & D pipeline . Researchers believe stem cells can be engineered into dopamine neurons , then transplanted into the brain to replace cells damaged in Parkinson ’ s disease , restoring function . But President George W . Bush places strict limitations on federal funds for stem cell research . Investigator Lorenz Studer , MD , of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center , part of the team that first successfully engineered dopamine neurons from human embryonic stem cells , is funded by MJFF to keep stem cell research moving forward in Parkinson ’ s .
