The Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ) Safe Drinking Water Hotline
Drinking water , including bottled water , may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants . The presence of these contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk . In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink , the EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain substances in water provided by public water systems .
More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency ’ s ( EPA ) Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 or visiting the website at www . epa . gov / safewater .
Ask The Lab - FAQs
Why does my water sometimes appear cloudy when I first turn on the tap ? This can be caused by tiny air bubbles in the water , and happens more often in cold weather . Once the water flows from the tap , it ’ s no longer under pressure and the air comes out of solution as bubbles . To test whether the cloudiness is caused by air bubbles , fill a clear glass with water and let it sit for a minute . If the cloudiness clears from the bottom to the top , rest assured this is air dissipating from your water .
Should I be worried about lead and my drinking water ?
Arlington Water Utilities conducted two rounds of lead and copper testing in 2020 . The testing found one sample ( out of 100 testing sites ) above the EPA-mandated action level for lead or copper of 15 ppb ( parts per billion ) for lead . However , compliance is not based on single samples , it ’ s based on the highest 10 percent of results . Ninety percent of Arlington ’ s lead samples detected 1.203 ppb or less , which is well below the action level .
Arlington ’ s lead and copper testing frequency was decreased from every six months to a three-year schedule by the TCEQ because of its history of testing results registering well below established limits . The Lead and Copper Rule , a U . S . Environmental Protection Agency program , is designed to minimize lead and copper levels in drinking water to protect the public health . If present , elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems , especially for pregnant women and young children . Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components in service lines and home plumbing . Arlington Water Utilities is responsible for providing high quality drinking water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components . When your water has been sitting for several hours , you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking .
If you are concerned about lead in your water , you may wish to have your water tested . Information on lead in drinking water , testing methods , and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at
www . epa . gov / safewater / lead .
The wording below is mandated by the TCEQ and cannot be changed . It is important to note that Arlington Water Utilities did collect and analyze all the required samples within the specified compliance period . The violation was received because the contracted private laboratory reported data to the TCEQ after the deadline .
LEAD & COPPER RULE MONITORING AND REPORTING VIOLATION MANDATORY LANGUAGE - TIER III IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
The City of Arlington Water Utilities ( PWS ID No . TX2200001 ) has violated the monitoring and reporting requirements set by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality ( TCEQ ) in Chapter 30 , Section 290 , Subchapter F . Even though these were not emergencies , as our customers , you have the right to know what happened and what we did to correct these situations .
We are required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis . Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards . During April 1 , 2020 through June 30 , 2020 , we did not complete all monitoring or testing and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of your drinking water during that time .
The table lists the contaminant ( s ) we did not properly test for during the last year , how often we are supposed to sample for sodium and iron , how many samples we are supposed to take , how many samples we took , when samples should have been taken , and the date on which the follow-up samples were taken .

More about the violation -
Each quarter in 2020 , TCEQ required that Arlington collect water quality parameters at 25 sites in the distribution system as well as all entry points to measure 12 substances . Of those 12 substances , there are only two – iron and sodium – that Arlington ’ s water laboratory does not have the instrumentation to analyze on site . Samples for these tests were collected within the required time frame and tested by a private lab in spring 2020 as required . Arlington Water received satisfactory test results from the lab soon after the tests were conducted . However , the private lab did not send the results from those tests to the TCEQ by the required deadline , causing the violation to occur . Once the department

The private lab reported the results from the period of April 1 to June 30 , 2020 to TCEQ in November . The water department has since removed this outside laboratory from our list of approved contract laboratories .
