CLINICAL GOALS 2020 UAB Cardiology established a cardiology oncology program that unites cardiologists, oncologists, and clinical researchers to help improve cardiovascular health for patients undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation for cancer. As an important new concept in cardiac care, the UAB cardio-oncology program identifies the potential risk associated with some cancer therapies and provides early intervention to prevent long-term cardiovascular damage. Our cardio- oncology care spans from the time of diagnosis through survivorship, optimizing the cardiovascular care of cancer patients. The program currently consists of three physicians, one nurse practitioner, and one nurse coordinator. Our cardio-oncology program has expanded in three important areas of clinical volume, research, and education, which complements UAB Medicine’s mission. HIGHLIGHTS • Add an inpatient cardio-oncology consult service to enhance the cardiovascular care provided by our inpatient hem-onc service and provide better continuity when patients are discharged • Earn designation through the Amyloid Research Consortium (ARC) • Expand volume of telemedicine appointments RESEARCH IN CARDIO-ONCOLOGY • Received grant funding for pilot project for cardiovascular monitoring of patients treated with immunotherapy • Began 2 clinical trials (MIGHTY, UPBEAT) in cardio-oncology at UAB EDUCATION IN CARDIO-ONCOLOGY Cardio-oncology providers left to right, are Garima Arora, MD, Carrie Lenneman, MD, and Riem Hawi, MD. • UAB cardio-oncology clinics at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, seeing patients 3 half-days per week • Improved access: The average wait time for an oncology patient to see cardiology was reduced from 21 days to fewer than 9 days. Same-day appointments often are provided when needed. • Over 350 cardio-oncology visits at The Kirklin Clinic between January 2018 and September 2018 • Added an NP to help with return cardio-oncology visits • Telemedicine visits for return cardio-oncology patients to reduce travel burden • New collaborative cardiovascular monitoring plans for CML patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors INTEGRATED CARE MODEL 34 UAB Cardiovascular Institute Annual Report CARDIO-ONCOLOGY • Training curriculum for cardiology fellows in cardio-oncology, with weekly clinic rotations and didactics • Mentoring fellows in cardio-oncology research projects SELECTED PUBLICATIONS • Lenneman CG, Sawyer DB.
