PREVENTIVE CARDIOLOGY ELECTROMAGNETIC NAVIGATIONAL BRONCHOSCOPY The UAB Division of Preventive Cardiology offers inpatient and outpatient primary and secondary prevention services, with an emphasis on lipid-lowering therapy and cardiac rehabilitation. Faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their contributions to this field. Electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy (ENB) is a minimally invasive procedure that allows physicians to navigate small airway passages of the lung to assist in earlier diagnosis and treatment of lung lesions. It allows physicians to biopsy or extract tissue samples that are not accessible with traditional bronchoscopy. UAB Medicine has extensive experience with ENB, being the first in Alabama to perform it and having completed more than 700 of the procedures over the last 5 years. COMPLEX AIRWAY DISORDERS UAB Medicine thoracic surgeons, in collaboration with colleagues in interventional pulmonology, perform a complete array of diagnostic, therapeutic, and palliative procedures for the management of malignant airway obstruction and benign tracheal stenosis. Procedures include rigid bronchoscopy, PDT, laser therapy, cryotherapy, and stenting. In addition, our thoracic surgeons are experienced in complex airway surgical techniques, such as tracheal resection and reconstruction for tracheal stenosis and tracheoplasty for patients with tracheomalacia. CHEST WALL SURGERY UAB Medicine thoracic surgeons specialize in the management of chest wall abnormalities, including benign and malignant tumors of the ribs and sternum and congenital problems such as pectus excavatum and carinatum. At present, UAB Medicine is the only hospital in Alabama that performs repair of pectus excavatum and carinatum in adults. Unlike at many other centers, we use a titanium plate for pectus repair that stays in place, which prevents recurrence and does not require a second operation to remove it.
