Located at Children’s of Alabama (COA) hospital, UAB’s congenital cardiac surgery program is one of the oldest of its kind in the nation, having been founded in 1966 by one of the fathers of congenital heart surgery, John W. Kirklin, MD. The program continues to enjoy the world-class reputation forged by Dr. Kirklin, thanks to an exceptional team of congenital heart surgeons and intensivists who work closely with pediatric cardiologists in caring for young patients. We provide surgical treatment of every conceivable congenital cardiac condition and show excellent outcomes. STAT mortality categories were developed by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery as a method to stratify pediatric cardiac surgical operations by risk. These categories allow comparisons among congenital heart surgery programs with regard to results across all levels of surgical complexity. The COA congenital heart surgery program for the Spring 2019 STS Congenital National Database Harvest reports an overall mortality for the last 4 years of 2.1% compared to the National STS mortality of rate of 2.8%. COA received an Overall Quality Star Rating of 2 stars, which is considered not significantly different than the STS mean. COA HIGH-VOLUME CONGENITAL HEART SURGERY CENTER STAT Categories with Volumes and Operative Mortality Last 4 years (2015-2018) STAT 1 Least complex, with lowest risk of mortality Quality rating of 2 stars, not statistically different than the STS mean STAT 5 Most complex, with highest risk of mortality COA 2018 STAT CATEGORIES AND MORTALITY PEDIATRIC CONGENITAL HEART PROCEDURES 2014-2018 Source: STS Spring Harvest 2019, period ended 12/31/19.
